Your Mac OS X keeps different alert tones on their device, but at the same time, if you want to set a new one, the site OS X Daily takes you how to setup new sound records to place on the exact directory.

All you have to do you need to take a new sound record or import from the web, after that place it in ~/Library/Sounds/ folder. After all you can verify the files are available on their particular place, and you can get it from System Preferences–>Sound Effects tab.
